Mississippi Delta

Edith Wharton had a quote, ‘one of the great things about travel is you find out how many good, kind people there are.’ That was never truer than about the Mississippi Delta.”

Cozy Corner Restaurant

Phil’s first stop in the Mississippi Delta is Cozy Corner Restaurant run by Desiree Robinson. Phil is served some southern classics like barbequed cornish hen, smoked ribs, and a delicious bologna sandwich with homemade barbeque sauce. Phil even gets Desiree’s grandson, Alexander, to try some of the family favorites for the first time!

Abe’s

Phil’s next stop is in Clarksdale, Mississippi where he meets Hank Burdine, a author, gentleman farmer, and delta historian at Abe’s for some old school barbeque. Abe’s was started by a lebanese immigrant in 1924, and this is his take on southern barbeque. They enjoy “the big mack of barbeque,” which is a pulled pork sandwich piled high with delicious pork, cole slaw, and sauce.

Address: 616 N State St, Clarksdale, MS 38614

Phil’s next stop down the delta is run by Cole Ellis. Cole put his modern twist on southern cuisine at his restaurant the Delta Meat Market. Phil and Cole are joined by Cole’s friend Matty Bengloff who owns Delta Dairy across the street. The three of them dine on a number of tasty dishes like their famous wedge salad, butternut squash soup, and hanger steak frites.

Jim and Samella’s

Phil’s next find in the delta is Talbert Fleming’s restaurant in Memphis which is named after his grandparents Jim and Samella. Talbert took over a house across the street from his grandmother's home and turned it into a full blown restaurant known for their amazing southern classics. Phil enjoys his meal at a communal table with some local regulars. They feast on fried chicken, waffles with apples and crown royal syrup, shrimp and grits, and the most amazing fried lobster tails you'll ever have.

Address: 841 Bullington Ave, Memphis, TN 38106

Jim’s Cafe

Phil finds himself in Greenville at Jim’s Cafe which originally opened in 1909. Phil sits at the “table of knowledge,” which is occupied by a group of charming old men who have been going there for years. Although the food is fantastic, the company might be a little better. Phil enjoyed a “dirty burger” piled high with meat and onion rings.

Address: 314 Washington Ave, Greenville, MS 38701

Doe’s Eat Place

Phil’s next stop may be the most special of this trip. Although Doe’s Eat Place is merely “just another house” on a residential street, it may be one of the best steakhouses in the country. Dominic “Big Doe” Signa started the place in 1941, but now you can see “Aunt Flo” in the kitchen whipping up some of her famous “wet salad.” Phil is joined by Julia Evans Reed who is an excellent raconteur and author and our old friend Hank for some thick cut steaks, salad, and tamales.

Address: 502 Nelson Street, Greenville, MS 38701

Highland Club

Phil’s finals stop in the Delta is Highland Club, which is a perfect place for some fried catfish, and to meet up with some friends Phil has met along the way like Hank, Julia, Cole Ellis, and Talbert from Jim and Samella’s. They feast on fried catfish, hush puppies, rotisserie chicken, and even some alligator! The evening ends out on the dock as Phil finally departs with a little help from Hank and his river boat.

Address: 462 Highland Rd, Chatham, MS 38731
