Memory Lane

Phil meets Dave Spector and they enjoy some skewered barbequed eel in a “blade runner-ish” alley called Memory Lane. The alley is known for these tiny bars, with no bathrooms, which makes the nickname “piss alley” self evident.

Phil dines with Sam Oda. They enjoy an elaborate tasting menu revolving around the theme of nature. Including a bread baked right at the table served with “moss butter.”

Takashimaya Nihonbashi

Phil meets food writer Yukari Sakamoto at a traditional japanese department store. They go around sampling bites from each station including a vendor selling pieces of “perfect” fruit that cost a fortune. As a consolation, they pick up some grapes, a fruit tart, and a bento box with lots of tasty treats.

Kyubey Ginza

Phil meets back up with japanese TV star Dave Spector for a traditional omakase meal from chef Yosuke Imada. Pieces included, Toro (fatty tuna), Uni, mackerel, and even some very live shrimp!

Gyorai

Phil and Shinji Nohara begin their ramen crawl at a place known for their broth. They order at a machine in the front, and watch as their soup is prepared in a device that is the intersection of coffee roaster and mad scientist. They eat their ramen as Phil learns the importance of slurping!

Tsukemen Ramen Festival

Phil and Shinji’s next stop is an outdoor festival with many small vendors selling their own take on ramen. Here, they find a stall specializing in Tsukemen ramen which is cold noodles dunked into hot broth. Plan your trip during this tasty festival!

Kikanbo

This next ramen stop is known for their spicy ramen. Even the entrance way showcases two demons fighting (perhaps over ramen?) Phil tries a bowl of extra spicy ramen, while his friend Shinji enjoys a bowl of regular spicy ramen.

Jimbocho Den

Phil meets back up with writer Yukari Sakamoto as they attend her favorite restaurant in the city. The restaurant is run by a very young and exciting chef (Zaiyu Hasegawa) who enjoys playing tricks and having fun with his food. This is evident as one of the dishes is served in a Kentucky Fried Chicken box, but inside lies a nest of hay and a beautifully fried piece of chicken. They also enjoy a salad that has grapes with faces on them, and even some ants!

Dojo Iidaya

Chef Imada from Kyubey invites Phil to a family dinner at his in-laws restaurant which has been around for over 100 years and has been passed down through generations. The restaurant specializes in pond loach, a staple in the japanese diet for centuries. The first dish is loach served in sake, then comes loach fried, and another dish with the loach’s bones removed. For desert, Phil teaches the family how to make a traditional egg cream.

FUN FACT!

Cat-loving people who live in apartments where pets are prohibited can get their cat-fix by visiting a cat cafe. You can hang out, pet the cats and pretend they’re yours without having to clean up the litter box!
